CHILDREN IN NEED BENEFITS FROM GIB’S GAME-FOR-A-LAUGH ATTITUDE

As part of the countdown for Gibraltar International Boat Show 2010, scheduled for 8 to 11 April, the Caleta Hotel hosted a Children In Need Gala Dinner on Friday 20 November to coincide with the traditional BBC campaign. With charity in mind, the Rock’s residents turned out in good spirits to make the evening go down with a memorable bang, raising £1,000 in the process.

With Stagnetto-donated Champagne in full flow, Blues Brothers’ sunglasses donned, Colorworks staff enticed from the bar and Minister Edwin Reyes alongside wife Christine in place as guests of honour, Gibraltar International Boat Show’s first charity ball was in session. And what a night it would be.

Gibraltarian businesses, residents and a special table from the local Breast Cancer Charity attended in their full finery for an evening of mouth-watering food, quizzes, dancing and even a round of good old fashioned bingo with the main prize donated by private Member’s Club Fifty-Five.

A contest to identify famous celebrities when they were young brought out an initial competitive streak amongst revellers, whilst pictures of two local celebrities in short trousers, the Minister himself and Duncan Quigley of Colorworks, proved that Gibraltar’s residents have a real sense of fun where charity is concerned. Meanwhile belle of the ball BFBS’s Charlene Guy swapped her role as Breakfast Show Presenter for Bingo Caller, whilst the Gibraltar International Boat Show hostesses made sure that no spare change was left in any pockets or handbags.

By popular demand the Yankee Blues Brothers ensured that the dance floor was filled until closing time and a silent auction of signed memorabilia, provided by Gibraltar’s very own Heroes, added a level of excitement at the end of the evening. All proceeds went to the night’s designated charity, Children in Need, who are set to receive a donation of over £1,000 from the event.
