COMMONWEALTH GAMES: Queen’s Baton today
by JES
The Queen’s Baton , having arrived from the UK last evening, will enjoy a higher profile this morning ( from 11.00) when it is ‘paraded’ from the ‘Rock- Cradle of History’ monument at the Victoria Stadium to the City Hall, with the Gibraltar Re-Enactment Society joining at Casemates – adding colour to this special occasion, where Gibraltar sports re-affirm their place in the British Commonwealth.
At midday the Baton will arrive at City Hall, where Mayor Olga Zammitt will make an address. The Queen’s Baton party will then be taken to the top of the Rock by Cable car for lunch and, in the evening, there will be a Mayoral Reception at City Hall. Tomorrow there will be a full day’s activities, including the schools, culminating in an official Dinner at the Eliott Hotel, before the Baton continues its travels. The Queen’s Baton, which is on its way around the Globe visiting the 71 nations of the Commonwealth, was accorded full ceremonial in the Channel Islands - ‘a memorable trip’ including a swimming relay - before leaving St. Peter Port, Guernsey for its 2049 kms to the Rock.
