Govt ends Gib Day in London Guildhall event
2015 saw the last Gibraltar Day in London event at the Guildhall. This was confirmed by Deputy Chief Minister Dr Joseph Garcia in Parliament yesterday during his budget speech when he announced a new Government strategy for Gibraltar’s political lobbying in London and elsewhere.
Gibraltar Day in London, he said, had reached bursting point and more significantly had been so heavily subscribed that one had to question the cost effectiveness of such an event on an annual basis.
In coming to this view, he said, the Government had evaluated “what needs to continue, be discontinued or changed”.
“The event which took place at the Guildhall in 2015 will be the last.”
The Government, he said, would now focus on encouraging productive sessions with high level contacts in Whitehall and in the City. The Lloyd Centre, he announced, had been booked for some 300 guests for Gibraltar Day in London, and this event would replace the mass Guildhall reception which had seen the attendance of some 1, 000 people.
“Of course we will continue to value the support and contact of UK-based Gibraltarians and Friends of Gibraltar. Many of them looked to October as a chance to renew that on-going relationship. A separate event is being planned for them to coincide with the annual Mass in Fulham.”
