Gibraltar-Berlin first art residency exhibition opens

This week sees the first exhibition in the Gibraltar - Berlin Artist Exchange Residency programme. Back in July local artist Alan Perez became the first local artist to form part of the one month art

residency exchange programme between Gibraltar and Berlin.

Mr Perez was the first local artist selected for this initiative organised by GCS on behalf of the Ministry of Culture, together with Lichtenberg Studios.

Already in Gibraltar is Berlin artist Max Sunhues in the second phase of the exchange programme with a two day exhibition officially opening at 6pm on Thursday at the Gustavo Bacarisas Gallery and which will open to the public on Friday and Saturday.

The Berlin art residence exchange programme is a cultural development initiative where the artists over a four week period develop their work and ideas in urban public spaces.

For Alan Perez, his time in Berlin was an experience of discovery.

“It was a month without clear parameters of what one has to do as an artist. So you are learning as you go along and investigating. Working in public spaces was not what I am used to but every time one is taken out of one’s comfort zone one grows more creatively as a person and as an artist.”
