'Acts of vandalism' reason for lift breakdown

The lift linking the town area to the upper town by the Engineer Lane Car Park will remain inoperative for a further two weeks. The broken escalator to the upper town should be back in operation next week. The lift has not been operational since 18 February when the incident occurred. The escalator broke down 27 February.

In answer to Chronicle questions a government spokesman said the lift was again broken because the doors being kicked in. As a result the inner doors have had to be replaced. The replacements are not spare parts and have had to be manufactured. Total damage caused is £1,800.
