Azagury like you have never seen him before

A different kind of exhibition opens today at the Gibraltar Garrison Library.

‘Jacobo Azagury at The Garrison Library, An Exhibition of Selected Drawings and Sketches’ is an  exhibition and sale of work of some 500 drawings and sketches of the late and much loved Gibraltarian artist Jacobo Azagury. The week-long show will include a series of cultural events celebrating the life and work of the artist.

A reception to launch the exhibition tonight will include a charity auction of three pieces in aid of the Calpe House Trust.

Tomorrow as from 11am there will be a full day of talks delivered to local A-level art students. Speakers will include: Ambrose Avellano on the life of the artist; Alan Perez and Max Sudhues who will speak about the Berlin-Gibraltar Artist exchange and deliver a workshop.

Members of the public who may be interested are welcome to attend. Then on Thursday the Fine Arts Association will hold a Live Portrait session at the Garrison Library as well.

THE COLLECTION

For many years, and since he arrived on the Rock back in the 1970s, Mimon Benaim was taken in by the work of this artist. On his retirement Mr Benaim, a local businessman, created the Hammer Art Gallery. The drawings and sketches in this exhibition have for many years formed part of his private collection amassed over almost five decades.

Over the years he bought directly from the artist and built a large collection of his drawings and sketches. But the works came from many different sources as far back as the 1970s. The earliest of the sketches dates back to 1924 but most of them are believed to have been produced before, during and after the WWII years.

Most of the sketches depict day to day happenings on the Rock. Some show great detail and attention to hands and studies of other parts of the human figure, and every day scenes. But there are also many portraits of local characters from the past which still need to be identified.

Today Mr Benaim, who has been helped in putting this project together, by his son David, says he wants to share them and give a chance to people to buy and own a work by Azagury.
