Community service orders pile up as Govt struggles to fill post
The Gibraltar Government’s struggle to fill the position of community service officer over the past year has led to a backlog in the number of convicted offenders waiting to carry out court-ordered community service.
The position has been vacant since the last post holder was moved to another department in June last year.
As a result, only two persons have completed their community service during that time, the Gibraltar Government said.
One defence lawyer described the backlog as “huge”.
“A couple of my clients have been given community service sentences and neither have been called to begin the unpaid work,” he said.
“One client dates back to January.”
