Court decision could impact on Bonnici’s time in prison

The man who in 2010 stabbed Opposition leader Daniel Feetham could have nearly five years shaved off the minimum term he must serve in jail before he can seek parole.

David Bonnici was sentenced in 2012 to two consecutive life terms for attempting to murder Mr Feetham, then Gibraltar’s Minister for Justice, and for wounding Dr Mahmoud Khan in a separate knife attack in St Bernard’s Hospital in 2009.

When Bonnici was jailed, Chief Justice Anthony Dudley recommended he serve a minimum of 17 years and 55 days before he could be considered for release on parole.

But a court decision yesterday could instead see him allowed to apply for release after 12 years and four months.

Bonnici suffered mental health problems and the decision on whether he will ever be freed will ultimately depend on doctors and the parole board, and must be rubber-stamped by the Justice Minister.

Yesterday’s judgement means they may be faced with that decision far sooner than anyone expected.
