Expert sheds light on global scale of human trafficking

Human trafficking is the third most lucrative criminal business in the world, with more than 40 million individuals believed to be affected, a seminar in Gibraltar heard yesterday.

Human trafficking is described as people being deceived, usually with a promise of a better job, and then being moved domestically or internationally into a place where they are then exploited, usually for forced labour or sex work.

They usually receive little or no pay, are treated “inhumanely” or as “disposable commodities”.

And though Gibraltar and its businesses may not be directly involved, the Rock’s role in the finance industry puts it “on the front line” of efforts to curtail this global illicit trade.
