Gibraltar on target to achieve World Heritage status

UNESCO World Heritage Committee meets in July this year in Istanbul. At some point in that meeting 'Gibraltar Neanderthal Caves and Environment' nomination is expected to be discussed.

Director of the Gibraltar Museum, Professor Clive Finlayson, who has been leading on the project since its inception, believes the recognition would allow the Rock to use Gorham’s Cave as a flagship to work on other sites which are also significantly important.

If Gibraltar were to be successful in its UNESCO bid for World Heritage status this would be a huge leap forward for local heritage, he acknowledges.

Professor Finlayson remains confident that with just a few months before the final decision is taken Gibraltar is on target.

By next month Gibraltar should know if there will be a recommended to the World Heritage Committee for World Heritage Status which will then vote and take the final decision.

July, he explains, is a marker but not the end of the story because there is still a lot of work to be done over the next few years to improve the product and take it further.
