Govt condemns fake Garcia profile on Facebook

Dr Joseph Garcia is not on Facebook.

That fact emerged last night after the Gibraltar Government warned that someone had set up a fake profile on the popular social media site pretending to be the deputy Chief Minister.

The site did not appear to have been used for any negative or criminal purpose, although it had sent out a number of friend requests many of which had been accepted.

But it drew an angry response from No 6 Convent Place, which moved swiftly to disassociate itself from the page.

“Please be aware that a fake profile under the name of Joseph Garcia (Deputy Chief Minister), is on Facebook,” the Gibraltar Government posted on its Facebook page.

“This profile is fake and was not created by, nor is it controlled by, the Deputy Chief Minister, the Hon Dr Joseph Garcia.”

“The public are strongly advised to ignore any attempts by this fake profile to make contact, and to report the account Joseph Garcia (Deputy Chief Minister) to Facebook as fake.”

“A request to remove the profile has been sent to Facebook.”

Caine Sanchez, a civil servant who works closely with Dr Garcia, said the profile had also been reported to the Royal Gibraltar Police.

“The person responsible may be liable for prosecution,” he posted on the fake profile’s timeline.
