Spain’s response to Brexit should focus on people and the economy, not on Gibraltar’s sovereignty, the vice president of the Junta de Andalucia said yesterday.

Manuel Jiménez Barrios echoed earlier statements as he outlined the “very advanced” work carried out so far by the Junta to prepare a response to the UK’s withdrawal from the EU.

The Junta had established a working group to assess the impact of Brexit on the region’s economy.

Andalucia is visited by over two million Britons every year, while 80,000 more reside there permanently. Additionally, some 9,000 residents in the Campo de Gibraltar work in Gibraltar.

“That is why it is reasonable that five departments headed by the Junta’s vice-presidency have been assessing the consequences of Brexit with sufficient time,” he said, adding the findings would be presented in September.
