Olympics committee should ‘let Gibraltar in’

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) should be "ashamed of itself" for blocking Gibraltar from fielding its own team, Chief Minister Fabian Picardo has said.

Gibraltar has repeatedly applied to take part in the games as an independent squad, but its requests have been dismissed.

Mr Picardo told the Press Association that Gibraltar faced similar problems in football and has only recently won its fight to compete in international tournaments after taking its battle to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

He said Spain had used its power to try to block the Rock from competing in sports.

“You can see a pattern developing - whenever an objective, international, fair tribunal is asked to consider Spain's spurious claims to our sovereignty, or her attempts to stop us participating in international bodies, those objective tribunals tell Spain to go and take a running jump,” he said.
