Picardo and Feetham in constructive talks on Brexit and Constitution

The Gibraltar Government and the GSD met yesterday to discuss the forthcoming EU referendum and the way forward regarding a review of the 2006 Constitution.

This comes off the back of heated parliamentary and media debate on the potential consequences for Gibraltar of a ‘Brexit’, as well as differing views on constitutional reform.

The Chief Minister, Fabian Picardo, Deputy Chief Minister Dr Joseph Garcia, Ernest Gomez, Chief Secretary, Leader of the Opposition Daniel Feetham and Opposition MP Trevor Hammond all took part in the meeting.

Mr Feetham arrived at No 6 Convent Place in good spirits ahead of the meeting, which lasted around an hour and a half.

As he exited the building he did not wish to make any comment on the meeting other than mentioning that the discussions went well.

“We spoke about the ‘Brexit’ and a possible review of the Constitution,” he said.

“I do not want to comment further…but it was a constructive meeting.”

Mr Picardo also declined to comment in any detail on the meeting.

However a joint statement by the Chief Minister and the Leader of the Opposition signalled that both politicians were confident they could work together on these issues.

“It was a positive opportunity to agree how to work together on issues related to the ‘Brexit’ referendum and hopefully also on a way forward to work together on a review of the 2006 Constitution,” the statement said.
