Plaque marks housing landmark

The Minister for Housing Samantha Sacramento unveiled a new plaque at Harington Building on Cumberland Road yesterday, marking its history as the first public housing scheme in Gibraltar.

The plaque has been placed directly above the original foundation stone laid in 1938, which has deteriorated.

It reads: “The foundation stone below reads as: In inauguration of the Gibraltar Housing Scheme approved during his Governorship. This foundation Stone was laid by His Excellency General Sir Charles H. Harington, G.C.B., G.B.E., D.S.O., D.C.L., Governor of Gibraltar September 1938.”

The plaque was an incentive by the Gibraltar Heritage Trust to ensure that future generations were aware that Harington Building was the first public housing scheme on the Rock.
