Police work force is overstretched – Yome

The Royal Gibraltar Police is in talks with the Gibraltar Government to increase its personnel, amid concerns its resources are overstretched to near breaking point, police Commissioner Eddie Yome has told the Chronicle.

He was reflecting on the findings of a report by HM Inspectorate of Constabulary which noted that, despite a vastly changed policing climate, the RGP’s size had remained the same since 1946.

“We are presently in negotiations with government and we have submitted a business case through the Police Authority to government on where we need those resources and why we need those resources and hopefully that will come to fruition in the not too distant future but basically our work force is really, really stretched,” Commissioner Yome said.

“My concerns are the elastic band will break.”

Mr Yome also said Gibraltar is a different territory to what it was 70 years ago, adding that further resources are needed to meet the current workload.
