Police highlight ‘growing problem’ of online crime

Cybercrime is a “growing problem” in Gibraltar, Commissioner of Police Eddie Yome said as he outlined plans to clamp down on internet offences ranging from fraud to abusive behaviour on social media.

Mr Yome, who was speaking ahead of world Safer Internet Day tomorrow, said the Royal Gibraltar Police would also strengthen links with other local and international bodies who play a role in tackling online crime.

A key element of the strategy is to educate and raise awareness of the need for online security, particularly among young people.

Over the past few months the Chronicle has reported local incidents of cyber fraud with victims too embarrassed to come forward and a series of social media ‘sextortion’ scams aimed at local men.

"Cybercrime is a growing problem for police forces worldwide, and Gibraltar is no exception,” Mr Yome said.

“Shocking figures show that an estimated 80% of cybercrime worldwide could be prevented through very simple online safety and general personal security precautions.”

He also highlighted how increasing incidents of inappropriate messages written to people online across the local community has put a strain on the police force.
