Keen competition for RGP jobs

The Royal Gibraltar Police recruitment drive received one of the ‘best responses’ in recent years with 130 applications received at New Mole House.

A police spokesman told the Chronicle over 500 application packs were distributed to interested applicants in just over a month. Last year’s recruitment drive received just shy of 100 applications.

The RGP have commenced entrance examinations and on Monday they will begin sending invitations for their selection weekend.

It is expected the candidates will be whittled down to 50 or 60 for a selection weekend held later this month. Candidates will then be interviewed and successful applicants will be notified.

Successful recruits starting pay is £29,993 and after 21 weeks of ‘Recruit School’ and the Passing Out Parade next May the salary will increase to £33,479. After five years constables earn £40,018 and after 10 years £47,093.

The officers will then be operational after the Passing Out Parade.

The recruitment process is a result of vacancies caused by retirements. The number of RGP officers has remained relatively stable since 1946 when there were 232 officers.

Following interviews successful applicants will be notified as from December 2.
