Presenting leading urologists Dr James Allan and Dr Paul Hughes
With a combined experience of over 50 years in urology, Dr James Allan andDr Paul Hughes bring a wealth of expertise and innovation to the Midtown Clinic and state “Two heads are better than one, especially with four listening ears.”

Dr Allan has been in practice for 35 years, 23 of which as a consultant while Dr Hughes has been for 18 years, seven of them as a consultant.

Their journey started in the UK, graduating from esteemed institutions Mr Hughes from Leicester and Mr Allan for St Thomas’s London.

Dr Allan was awarded the only Urology Fellowship in the UK in Endo-urology and keyhole urology. After completing this he was awarded a further Fellowship at the world renowned Cleveland Clinic in America.

“I was a UK consultant urologist for 20 years specialising in minimally invasive urology, kidney cancer, stone disease and paediatric urology,” he said.

Dr Hughes also has endourology and laparoscopic Fellowships from the UK but also a genetics degree, a urogenital pain thesis and a USA Fellowship in Cleveland. He is one of a handful of urologists in the UK to have been awarded both a British and World Fellowship in endourology, stone surgery and laparoscopic urology.

The move to Gibraltar and the Midtown Clinic was driven by a desire to tackle new challenges in a vibrant environment. Recognising the opportunities provided by the GHA and the collaboration with Guys and St Thomas’s, they've brought their expertise to serve the community in Gibraltar.

As urologists, both Dr Allan and Dr Hughes manage a spectrum of conditions involving both male and female urinary systems. From stones and infections to cancers and erectile dysfunction, their practice spans all age groups, addressing issues of kidneys, bladder, prostate, and male reproductive organs.

“Urologists are surgeons who treat problems involving the female urinary system and the male genitourinary tract. Although urology is a surgical speciality, a substantial amount of urologists’ work involves the medical management of conditions without surgery,” Dr Allan explained.

“Urology patients range from babies to the elderly. Urologists manage conditions involving the kidneys, ureters, bladder, prostate and male reproductive organs.”

“Common conditions include stones, tumours, infections, incontinence and erectile dysfunction in men.”

“They also manage impotence, the male menopause, sterilisation and male infertility. 10% of GP consultations and 20% of acute hospitals referrals are related to urological conditions.”
“Sadly we see greater incidences of cancer due to the high prevalence of smoking. Stones are married to sunshine and diet,” he added.

Patients visiting Dr Allan and Dr Hughes can expect a blend of cutting-edge technology and seasoned wisdom. They offer minimally invasive investigations and advanced management techniques while leaning on their years of experience to provide personalised care tailored to individual needs.

Their partnership embodies a fusion of innovation and experience. Patients benefit from the synergy of their collective knowledge and expertise, ensuring thorough care and attention to detail.
