Bishop to set sights on ‘active, youthful’ church

As Bishop Carmel Zammit prepares for his installation tomorrow at midday at the Cathedral of St Mary the Crowned, as the eighth Roman Catholic Bishop of the Gibraltar Diocese, he told the Chronicle Christians locally needed to know more about their religion.

He says his flock need instruction in Catechism and it is essential for them to make themselves aware and follow the teachings of the Church. Bishop Zammit sees this as one of his priorities as his episcopate begins.

“I do not know how I am going to do it but there will be discussion and I want people to tell me their thoughts on how to take the Church forward in Gibraltar, and to tell me what they think,” he said.

Bishop Zammit is prepared to listen and emphasises that he believes in consultation and this is the road he will take in his episcopate in all areas.

But the biggest challenge will be to ensure that the Church locally “is faithful to its mission” and to “bring the Good News to others”.
