British Forces plants tree for Earth Day

British Forces Gibraltar supported Earth Day 2016 yesterday by planting a tree in Four Corners.

The Casuarina equisetifolia or Australian pine tree, was donated by Gibflora and was planted as part of the Earth Day Network’s ‘Trees for the Earth’ campaign.

Commander British Forces, Commodore Ian McGhie and British Forces Gibraltar’s Sustainable Development Manager, Penny Tibbo attended the tree planting ceremony.

Mrs Tibbo said the Ministry of Defence is committed to Sustainable Development and “British Forces Gibraltar wanted to participate in Earth Day Network’s 2016 campaign ‘Trees for the Earth’ because the Ministry of Defence are continuously looking for opportunities to go beyond legislative compliance and ensure we make a contribution to protecting our environment. Planting a tree today is a step towards the UK Government’s mainstreaming approach.”

Earth Day began in 1970 as a day to celebrate the planet, it now occurs annually on April the 22nd to encourage people to be more environmentally friendly. This year the organisers are hoping to use the celebration to plant 7.8 billion trees worldwide.
