Charity skydive raises over £10,000 and puts spotlight on health issues

Charity Sky Dive Gibraltar presented two cheques for over £5,000 each to the Gibraltar Alzheimer’s and Dementia Society and Prostate Cancer Support Group yesterday.

Maria Palma from the charity said they opted for these two charities as she and her colleague Michelle Manning have grandparents that suffer with Alzheimer's and other family members who had prostate cancer.

She said: “The event itself was fantastic, everyone was up for it, and we had a lot of young skydivers some as young as 16 and we had 31 people take part in the day.”

Each diver had to raise a minimum of £160 each. Ms Palma did not jump but Ms Manning is an avid jumper and took part in the event.

Receiving the cheque for the Prostate Cancer Support Group was its Chairman John Diaz.

“This cheque means quite a lot, what we need to do is raise more awareness, awareness is very, very important in what we are doing,” he said.

“We try to focus on this so that people are aware of prostate symptoms. But the money will go towards the prostate clinic that we are running, we need to revamp and see what we need there.”

Daphne Alcantara the Chairperson of the Gibraltar Alzheimer's and Dementia Society accepted the cheque on behalf of the charity.

“This means a lot to us, in the a sense that the money will go to people who are living with dementia and not just helping them but also the carers and families,” she said.
