Ciudadanos motion highlights tough stance on Gibraltar
Ciudadanos believes Spain must push for joint sovereignty over the Rock and launch an international campaign to alert other countries to “the grave situation” created by Gibraltar.
In a parliamentary motion filed last week, the centre-right party led by Albert Rivera describes Gibraltar as “a tax haven” and a hotbed for smuggling that is damaging neighbouring communities in Spain.
It said Spain should freeze all non-mandatory cooperation with the UK relating to Gibraltar pending negotiations on sovereignty.
The motion will have no practical effect because it was tabled just days before the Spanish parliament was dissolved ahead of the June 26 general election. As such it will not even be debated.
But the document, much of which is based on misinformation and biased views of Gibralar, offers a deep insight into the party’s thinking. It leaves little doubt that Ciudadanos shares much common ground on Gibraltar with the Partido Popular.
