Cross Frontier Group ponders Brexit Q+A initiative

The Cross Frontier Group will be launching an initiative in the coming weeks to answer any questions people may have on Brexit.

Chairman Lionel Chipolina told the Chronicle this was one of the things discussed at a meeting held between board members yesterday morning in La Línea.

Any discussion held on Brexit “is speculation” because Mr Chipolina said it is difficult to call at this stage.

Mr Chipolina said: “The Cross Frontier Group will put citizens’ concerns on the table and seek responsible assurances.”

“We want to call out to our leaders to collaborate in measures that ensure that citizens’ rights and business interests are being met.”

This includes reaching a status quo to ensure fluidity at the frontier and other collaborative solutions.

“If the Withdrawal Agreement goes through, it gives us one year and nine months to work together and make sure the memoranda is vertebrate and there is good will on both sides,” Mr Chipolina added.

“In the event of a no deal scenario, we would have to ensure any contingency plans are collaborative and not unilateral.”

Mr Chipolina said they have already spoken to the Chief Minister Fabian Picardo who said he has intended that the spirit of the memoranda is adhered to.

Talks have also been held with the Socialist government in Spain, who said it depends on “political will”, but the Group hopes for a “positive outcome”.

This was the first meeting of the year for members of the Cross Frontier Group.
