DEHCC cracks down on plastic

The Department of Environment, Heritage, and Climate Change is supporting the worldwide movement to reduce, and eventually stop the use of single-use plastic.

Prime movers of the campaign in Gibraltar is the Nautilus Project, an NGO with its own initiatives to reduce single use plastics and leading with its programme of encouraging businesses and others to provide water refill stations.

The Gibraltar Government is joining in this initiative, for example at the Victoria Stadium.

DEHCC will add its name to the refill campaign and will provide refills at all Lifeguard stations in all the beaches this summer. It is hoped that this will encourage beachgoers not to take single use plastic bottles to the beach.

Minister for Environment and Climate Change John Cortes said: “The Department is very happy to push our common aim to end single-use plastic, and this initiative in the beach this summer is an important one.”

“The Nautilus Project is doing excellent work and deserve the support of the whole community, and my Department is happy to do so.”

In a joint statement a spokesperson for The Nautilus Project said: “We feel that this is a very important step in minimising our plastic pollution during the summer period and we encourage beachgoers to make full use of it.”
