GGCA angers members with same sex marriage bulletin

An internal bulletin on same sex marriage circulated by the GGCA has drawn flak from some members who feel the white collar union was being impartial in a sensitive debate.

Some members have written to the union complaining that the bulletin appears to offer support for those campaigning for a change in the marriage laws but neglects the other side.

The union said it had not pressured any members to back a change in the law but that the bulletin was in line with trade union principles of equality and non-discrimination.

The bulletin was circulated earlier this week and included a template letter backing same sex marriage addressed to the Gibraltar Government as part of its consultation.

The GGCA advised members who supported a change in the law to fill in the letter and return it to the union for forwarding to the government.

But the bulletin offered no alternative template for members who oppose a change in the law.

“This is not an issue in which the union should have become involved,” one disgruntled member told the Chronicle.

“The least they could have done is give the other side of the argument.”
