Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon says she sees the potential for “building common ground” with Gibraltar as Scotland begins to explore the options to remain in the EU.

Ms Sturgeon has pledged to explore all options and is expected to return to Holyrood to propose a second independence referendum if the Scottish Government concludes it is "the best or only way to protect Scotland's place in the EU". Addressing the Scottish Parliament in an emergency session yesterday she wanted a mandate to defend Scotland's interests and is due to travel to Brussels today to meet European Parliament President Martin Schulz.

The Gibraltar Government yesterday confirmed Chief Minister Fabian Picardo had been able to speak to the Ms Sturgeon about giving effect to the possibility of Scotland and Gibraltar remaining in the EU, in line with the views of their respective people.

It was agreed that technical experts from the two Governments should meet in order to review the situation.
