Fernando Grande-Marlaska, Spain’s Minister of the Interior, said yesterday that Spanish law enforcement agencies were liaising closely with their Gibraltarian counterparts following the death of a Spanish nation off Eastern beach on Tuesday.

Mr Grande-Marlaska was in Cádiz and was quizzed by reporters for a reaction on the fatal incident, which he described as an accident.

"The relationship of coordination and cooperation with Gibraltar is very good," he said.

"Both the Guardia Civil in Spain and the competent authorities in Gibraltar are investigating and what we know is that this was a regrettable accident."

"We will await the conclusions of the investigation."
