Good prognosis for booted eagle rescued by police

A booted eagle is recovering well at GONHS’s raptor unit after it was plucked out of the sea off Europa Point by crew from the Royal Gibraltar Police’s marine section last weekend.

Under the care of Vincent Robba and his team at GONHS, the male adult – aged three or four - is eating well and recuperating with the aid of sleep.

Mr Robba explained that the bird was “very thin and completely exhausted” when it was rescued, and “had no energy to even stand up”.

“If he had been in the water for two or three minutes more he would have drowned,” he added.

A member of the public alerted the authorities after seeing the bird being attacked by seagulls who were trying to “down” it off Europa Point.

The RGP Marine Section deployed a boat to the area and rescued the booted eagle, which was uninjured despite its ordeal.

Since its rescue, it has put on “a slight bit of weight”.

It is hoped that he will be released back into the wild in a couple of weeks.
