Govt invites proposals for Northern Defences

The Gibraltar Government has invited expressions of interest for the management of the Northern Defences for touristic and recreational purposes.

The Northern Defences is an important part of Gibraltar’s historical and cultural identity, the invitation states as it highlights recent investment into clearing up the area.

The Government is therefore inviting serious proposals that will “safeguard, embellish and showcase” the features and monuments inherent in the land, with the potential of further expansion to include other adjacent assets in the area of Landport Bridge.

The monuments and tunnels within the land are listed under the ‘Gibraltar Heritage Trust Act 1989’.

All proposals must therefore integrate the sensitive use of the monuments, tunnels and natural environment as well as the creation and management of a “first class” tourism attraction and the retention of open land for the use of the community as an amenity or for leisure activities.

Proposals that seek to transfer ownership of the Northern Defences away from the Gibraltar Government will not be considered.

The deadline for submissions is Friday September 16, 2020.
