Govt puts ‘illegal’ rentals under closer scrutiny

The Gibraltar Government is considering setting up a Register of Residential Tenancies in order to crack down on homeowners who illegally rent out their properties while claiming they still live there.

The move would target people who rent out a Gibraltar property even while keeping that address as their principal place of residence in order to access benefits such as schooling and Category 2 status.

It would also catch out those who rent out houses purchased under the government’s shared-ownership schemes, or those who rent out properties but do not declare the additional income.

“This register would mean that no additional tenancies could be registered against a property where one occupier is already taking a benefit from it,” the Government told the Chronicle.
