Govt signals alleged abuse of prescription scheme

Prescriptions issued by the Gibraltar Health Authority were allegedly being traded by some patients for cash or other products in “a number” of local pharmacies, the Gibraltar Government claimed yesterday as it warned it would crack down on the practice.

Government officials said they were ‘very concerned’ not just about the financial implications of the practice but the health risks too.

“A number of pharmacies were allegedly trading prescriptions for cash or other goods,” a government spokesman said.

“This is illegal and also endangers patients’ wellbeing.”
