Heritage Trust wants to retain ‘Europa Reservoir Tanks’

The Gibraltar Heritage Trust is calling on its members to support them on “a potential” heritage issue involving the Europa Reservoir Tanks underneath the ex-Casino on Europa Road.

In a newsletter to its members at the weekend the Trust said it had for some time been engaging in, and following, the issue of the potential fate of the tanks, the site of which was sold onto a developer more than ten years ago.

The tanks are still in use by Aquagib for the supply of water for sanitation and provision of water for fire fighting use with two weeks supply. Rarely emptied they have been undergoing maintenance recently.

The Chronicle understands letters have also been sent to Government ministers on the issue.

The site, says the Trust, received Outline Planning Permission for a luxury residential scheme on it, which has since expired and not been renewed by the DPC when last tabled.

“We understand that there is no further movement at the moment in terms of a set date to resubmit for planning permission, although as time goes by we are concerned that a scheme will be re-submitted to DPC that will likely include the complete demolition of or major demolition of the tanks as a fait-accompli, and with it yet another irreplaceable part of our engineering heritage will vanish for good,” it warns.
