Jennifer takes a stroll on Main Street

Jennifer del Corazón de Jesus, Jennifer Gomila, was in Gibraltar yesterday on a short visit.

Jennifer is an enclosed Gibraltarian Carmelite nun who follows the Discalced Carmelite Rule and lives in the monastery in Ronda.

Only in Gibraltar on rare occasions since she joined the order 31 years ago, the last time she was here was for a few hours three years ago.

Yesterday morning she walked on the Main Street to the delight of many. Pushing a pram with her young great-nephew Lewis, she was stopped with every step she took, many old friends wanted to say hello as well as many who had never met her before but knew of her.

Jennifer del Corazón de Jesus was recently the subject of a film which was premiered locally called ‘Jennifer’ by Gibraltarian director Nina Danino. Jennifer Gomila chose a life of poverty, chastity, obedience and enclosure and the film looked into life in an enclosed monastery over the course of one day.

Having been granted special permission to visit Gibraltar yesterday to visit her mother in hospital, Jennifer spent a day with her family.

As she walked down Main Street, she told the Chronicle, “just say, I saw Jennifer, she has not changed, everybody was stopping her. How do I feel about being back in Gibraltar, I just feel I am back in Gib. Full stop. Gibraltar has changed a lot”.
