New role of Assistant Commissioner at the RGP

A new role of Assistant Commissioner was formed within the Royal Gibraltar Police, the Commissioner of Police Ian McGrail announced today.

The role will go to the former Chief Superintendent Richard Mifsud and was approved by the Minister for Justice Neil Costa.

The new role came about following a review of the RGP’s present rank structure commissioned by Mr McGrail. It established that the existing rank did not fully represent the role being performed by the Chief Superintendent either within the organisation or in a multiagency forum.

Mr McGrail explained that the current bearer of the rank performed a role more akin to that of an Assistant Chief Constable in a UK county force or that of a Commander in the Metropolitan Police.

An example is that the Chief Superintendent chairs the second tier of Gibraltar’s National Security apparatus, the Executive Committee of the Gibraltar Contingency Council (EXCOGCC). Most of the members are Heads of Department.

Mr McGrail believes that the existing role did not represent the role’s position in the RGP hierarchy as a second-in-command in the organisation and as deputy in his absence.

Mr Mifsud will assume the Assistant Commissioner post immediately.
