RGP confirms gun border incident
The gun incident on the Spanish side of the border on Wednesday has been confirmed by the Royal Gibraltar Police. A video was circulated on the social media showing a gun being pointed by a Guardia Civil officer on the Spanish side of the Gibraltar and Spain border which apparently occurred on the Wednesday afternoon.
The video picked up by many of the UK newspapers.
In its statement yesterday the RGP said it understood the incident involved an Irish national who may have been unfamiliar with the border crossing.
“The RGP also understands that the incident was resolved with the individual in question being released without charge. The RGP has no involvement in this matter and will make no further comment,” said the statement.
Meanwhile Spanish media reported that the vehicle had crossed the fence via the red lane and had not responded to the stop signs of the officers.
Informed sources, according to Spanish media reports, had said the person in the vehicle with children had alleged to be in a hurry because one of the minors was desperate to use the toilet and could not wait for the tail of the green lane.
On passing through the control of the Civil Guard at the border, said the reports, there was no response to the first signs of the police calling for the vehicle to stop and one of them pulled the pistol for a few seconds until the car finally stopped.
