‘Sexting’ cases highlight need for awareness

The Royal Gibraltar Police has dealt with 10 ‘sexting’ complaints this year involving children, in a development that highlights the need to educate youngsters about the potential long-term consequences of the practice.

Sexting is the act of sending explicit photos or messages, most commonly via mobile phone and intended for one sole recipient.

The problem is that once sent, the person in the image loses control over the photograph.

Experience from other countries shows that private messages intended solely for the recipient can end up distributed online or forwarded to others.

In Gibraltar, five formal and five informal complaints were logged by the RGP this year, although no action has been taken to charge the young children involved.
