Spanish Union leaders slam PP’s ‘anachronistic approach’ to Gib

Spanish Trade Union leaders have criticised the Partido Popular’s ‘anachronistic approach’’ towards Gibraltar over the past four years, although they defended Spain’s ‘legitimate claim’ over the Rock’s sovereignty.

Speaking ahead of the Spanish Civil War symposium yesterday at the John Mackintosh Hall, Candido Mendez, UGT General Secretary, and Ignacio Fernandez Toxo, Comisiones Obreras General Secretary, spoke to the Chronicle on cross-frontier relations between Gibraltar and Spain.

“I think that relations over the last four years have been an anachronism which harms the people of Gibraltar and the Campo de Gibraltar,” he said.

“We need to solve this situation as anything that impedes the free circulation of people and goods is wrong.”

Sr Mendez said that, although Spain has a ‘legitimate claim’ to Gibraltar, it should not outweigh the relationship that two European allies should have.

“I think that both governments need to be more flexible and facilitate the situation,” he said.
