Sun Awareness campaign highlights skin cancer risk

The dangers of contracting skin cancer will be placed under the spotlight in the Gibraltar Health Authority’s skin cancer screening day at the Primary Care Centre this Saturday.

The event, now in its third year, provides a unique opportunity for the public to have any notable skin changes checked out by the Dermatology team. Two visiting consultant dermatologists will be available for confirmation of diagnostics on the day.

Members of the public are encouraged to access the main entrance between 9am and 11.30am and 2pm and 4.30pm where they can be examined by a professional. No appointment is required.

John Cortes, Minister for Health, has supported the worldwide initiative since its origins and is keen to help promote awareness of the dangers of sun exposure.

SUN AWARENESS

The screening day marks the launch of the annual Sun Awareness campaign, also aimed at raising public awareness on the dangers of overexposure. It also re-enforces measures that can be taken to ensure maximum protection.

“In Gibraltar we already have a substantial number of skin cancers that are managed by the dermatology department and the surgeons in the hospital,” a GHA spokesman said. “It is imperative that we do all we can to reduce future incidences. The importance of protecting ourselves from sun exposure cannot be over emphasized.”

This initiative is aimed at looking at significant skin changes which could indicate skin cancer. It is not for examination of chronic skin conditions.
