Team Britannia gala raises £15,000

A champagne gala sponsored by Team Britannia, a team aiming to beat the world record for fastest circumnavigation of the globe, raised £15,000 for charity, with £7,500 going to Calpe House.

Members of HMS Diamond who were in port on a routine stop attended the event held on the Sunborn last Saturday night.

A charity for ex-service people who have lost limbs, BLESMA, will also receive £7,500.

“The event not only raised money for charity but organisers estimate that approximately “£250,000 was added to the local economy and over £1 million in global media coverage to Gibraltar,” Team Britannia said.

The gala reception was initially meant to be a send-off to the team who were due to set off on their world record attempt the following morning, but issues with the boat led to a delay in the start date, which is now March 12, 2017.

Team Britannia decided to put a positive spin on the disappointing news and hold the function for charity instead, purposefully selecting a charity close to many in Gibraltar, Calpe House.
