Underpants stash lands smuggler in jail

A Spanish man who was caught smuggling nearly half a kilo of cannabis resin stashed in his underpants was yesterday jailed for five months.

At a sentencing hearing at the Magistrates Court Francisco Jose Mateos Alarcon, a resident of La Linea, pleaded guilty to charges of possession, importation and possession with intent to supply the haul of drugs.

On Wednesday, Mateos Alarcon had been stopped by Customs officers as he drove into Gibraltar from Spain and upon being searched five slabs of cannabis weighing 493.39g were uncovered from his underwear.

He had done so because he was desperate for money and had been promised 50 Euros in exchange for couriering the drugs, his lawyer Patrick Canessa told the court.

He was sentenced to five months in jail by Stipendiary Magistrate Charles Pitto.

Kerrin Drago appeared for the Crown.
