10 years of Bayside and Westside Drama Group as they compete in Rochester

Past and present drama students gathered at the Bayside Drama Studio this week to celebrate 10
years of the Bayside and Westside Drama Group
Heading for the UK the present team of young actors performed the two plays they will be
presenting this week at the 2018 Duncan Rand Youth One-Act Play Festival held at the Medway Little
Theatre in Rochester (Kent). The group leaves the Rock today to compete in the festival for the sixth
consecutive year. Their entries “La Calle Commedia” and Layla” are the same two plays entered for
this year’s Gibraltar Drama Festival written and produced by their director Julian Felice.
“Our links with the Medway Theatre are very strong. Having already performed these plays,
performing them again gives us the opportunity to implement much of what the adjudicator tells us
in the Gibraltar Festival and it is great that we get the chance to do it again. It is also a great
experience for the students to perform outside Gibraltar,” he said.
The group have always been successful at this festival on all occasions ad have won best play in the
past two years.
“We hope to make it three in a row,” said a confident Mr Felice.
The group return to the Rock on Sunday.
Launched in 2009 the group first performed “Grimm Tales” and has consistently presented work at
Bayside with 12 to 18 year old Bayside and Westside students making up the group.
The night also saw a series of monologues presented by former members who are studying drama
and performance at university.
Culture Minister Steven Linares congratulated the group and their director Mr Felice. He also
presented the annual awards presented to the members in various categories including best actor
and most improved performer.
