Highly successful Kids Athletics Day 2024

Gibraltar might have celebrated it a day later but the World Athletics Kids Athletics Day 2024 was just as much a success as it would have been a day earlier.
The GAAA organised on the 8th of May its Kids Athletics Day 2024 under the World Athletics umbrella with some 170 children participating across all ages.
Over 90 athletes from Lourdians were joined by 40 athletes from Club Atletismo Linense and a further 30 from Bahia De Algeciras in what was a three hour long event with much excitement.
The event saw a 60m hurdles, non-competitive event in which all participated.
There were also 80m and 100m non competitive events and longer sprint races in the 200m, 330m, 400m and 1000m which saw first, second and third receiving trophies.
Kids Athletics Day was originally scheduled to be celebrated on the 7 May 2024, however, many association across the globe had the flexibility to schedule for other days of the week.
According to World Athletics the aim of the Kids’ Athletics Day was to have a “day dedicated to celebrating children and young people across the globe participating in athletics and being active. We believe that every child is born to move, play and explore no matter where they are in the world or their individual circumstance. We are aiming to use the power of athletics to inspire children and young people all over the world to get moving, be more active, develop their skills and confidence and to connect with sport and physical activity for life.”
Although the day has seen a name change World Athletics Day has been an annual feature in Gibraltar’s calendar for many years. In recent years participation from Spanish clubs increasing the interest and providing local athletes with a platform to compete against a variety of levels on home soil.
The event also opened up the start of the track season which will soon see schools participating in the annual interschool relays along with the traditional sports day events.
