Governor and Chief Scout attends first Scout Council AGM in full uniform

Governor Ed Davis, Chief Scout of Gibraltar, attended his first Scout Council annual general meeting. Held at the Convent Ballroom, the Governor, was wearing the scouting uniform at the meeting and Governor's investiture where over 50 members of the Council (adult volunteers) attended.

Recently the Governor and the Chief Commissioner of the Gibraltar Scout Association, Mark Rodriguez, were at the Scout Association’s National Headquarters in Gilwell Park, Chingford, Essex, undergoing an induction as part of taking up their roles in the Scouting movement locally.

Traditionally the position of Chief Scout of Gibraltar has been offered to the Governor or Governor-General of the territory. The role is largely honorary with the Chief Commissioner taking the lead role in the day-to-day running of the Branch.

After a full day of activities, meetings and brain-storming sessions, the Governor was invested into the Scout Movement and into his role as Chief Scout of Gibraltar by Chris Neal, International Advisor of the Scout Association.

Meanwhile at the Convent Mark Rodriguez spoke of the four strategic objectives and vision of the movement locally. These include growth, inclusivity, youth shaped where every young person should be able to shape their Scouting experience, and community impact.

“We believe Scouting makes a difference to individuals and to society. Our members take action in the service of others, but we want to do more,” he said.

The Chief Scout, Governor Ed Davis, presented Wood Badge Awards to a number of scouts. The Wood Badge is a Scouting leadership programme and the related award for adult leaders in the programmes of Scout associations throughout the world. Wood Badge courses aim to make adult volunteers better leaders by teaching advanced leadership skills. 

On completion of the course, participants are awarded the Wood Badge beads to recognise significant achievement in leadership and direct service to young people. 

 The Wood Badge is externally recognised by other organisations. Adults who have gained their Wood Badge are eligible to join the Institute of Leadership and Management at the grade of Associate Member.
