Cavalcade needs more support from the Gibraltar community

President of the Three Kings Cavalcade Committee Eric Abudaraham has called on the Gibraltar community as a whole to support the event in a bigger way as it prepares to celebrate its 60th anniversary next year. Speaking at the annual prize giving ceremony following the Cavalcade on Tuesday evening Mr Abudaraham said that “if Gibraltar wants to have a Cavalcade things have to change” if the event was to survive into the future.

He praised the support of all those who had been involved in this year’s event and together with his committee was very grateful to all who had participated.

But as president he made it clear that there needed to be a concerted effort by all in the community and from all sectors in future. He admitted the 2016 event had proven more difficult to get the “show on the road and very frustrating”.

Mr Abudaraham mentioned that the cost of the Cavalcade in relation to the “spectacle” it provided was “peanuts” in comparison to other events held locally.

He again reiterated the problems facing the committee and the need for facilities in order to make it easier for more clubs, associations and individuals to participate. Top of the list was the issue of  covered areas to build the floats.

Present at the ceremony was the Mayor Adolfo Canepa and Culture Minister Steven Linares.

Junior winners the Dolphin Youth Club.

The winners were presented with their trophies and all the participants also received recognition.

This year a number of appreciation awards were presented including to our own Chronicle photographer Johnny Bugeja who has always supported the event for many years.
