The Czech Republic’s Ambassador to London, Libor Secka, arrived in Gibraltar last night ahead of the official opening of an Honorary Consulate of the Czech Republic in Gibraltar.

It follows the appointment earlier this year of Stanislav Cech as Honorary Consul of the Czech Republic in Gibraltar.

Mr Libor, who is accompanied by Consul General Pavel Hajfler, will attend a reception at the Rock Hotel this evening marking the formal opening of the Czech Honorary Consulate, which will be housed in the Cloister Building.

This is the first time the Czech Republic has opened an honorary consulate in Gibraltar, and the first time for there to be any kind of Czech representation in Gibraltar since 1848, under the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy.

Beyond providing assistance to Czech nationals – of whom over 12,000 visit Gibraltar each year – Mr Cech hopes to build stronger links between the Czech Republic and Gibraltar in three fields in particular: tourism; economic and commercial cooperation; and education.
