Debenhams to opens its doors on the Rock in September

Debenhams, the UK’s oldest department store established in 1813, is set to take over the two BHS stores at the ICC and Main Street as from next month.

Yesterday, International Franchises Limited, IFL, announced both its BHS stores locally would cease trading and would immediately begin an “exciting new partnership with Debenhams” bringing a unique mix of designer products, exclusive own brands and international brands.

The partnership will also secure the jobs of all its employees formerly working in the BHS stores and which is expected to grow its team further in the coming months.

BHS had been trading in Gibraltar for 31 years since 1985. Earlier this year the fate of all 114 BHS stores in UK was described as the biggest retail collapse since the closure of Woolworths in 2008.

IFL first approached Debenhams some 18 months ago looking for a brand which would help replicate what already existed locally and offer what IFL Director George Russo describes as the “next level of retail with more brands and more fashionable products and a more extensive range because here we have the opportunity to make the first real department store in Gibraltar and that is what our end goal is.”
