Garrison Image Library chronicle’s Rock’s modern history

The Gibraltar Garrison Library will embark on a new online project throughout 2016 to launch a digital image library. Many of the photographs come from the Gibraltar Chronicle image archives and document key moments in Gibraltar’s modern history. The Gibraltar Garrison Image Library forms part of a wider digitisation programme headed by its director Dr Jennifer Ballantine Perera who believes this project is both significant for the library and the community as a whole.

“Institutionally this project ties in with our mission to continue to provide access to our collections in ways that reflect how information is accessed in this 21st century,” she acknowledges.

The Garrison Library holds an archive on print and print culture in Gibraltar which includes negatives and photographs. Many of these images were published on the pages of the Gibraltar Chronicle over its 200 year history.

The Library is presently digitising the negatives held from the Gibraltar Chronicle dating back to the sixties and seventies.

The Image Library at the Gibraltar Garrison Library is, on the whole, is derived from the images taken by Gibraltar Chronicle staff through the years

Dr Ballantine Perera believes this makes the project “close to our roots given the history we share with the Gibraltar Chronicle”.

“The Gibraltar Chronicle was established at the Garrison Library in 1801, the newspaper was printed on Library premises and both newspaper and Library have a shared history.   The Library is therefore the repository for these and other Chronicle archival material.”
