GHA’s ‘No smoking clinics’ could be the answer to give up smoking

Six new people a week attend the Gibraltar Health Authority clinics in order to stop smoking. The GHA holds weekly clinics for new patients as well as follow up clinics. These have seen an increase over the years in the number of people who over a number of weeks kick the habit successfully.

Yesterday on ‘No Smoking Day’ the Gibraltar Health Authority promotion group was at the ICC with information and a variety of tools to help people stop smoking.

Nurse Practitioner, Elizabeth Borges, who runs the No Smoking Clinic, said the percentage of people successfully giving up smoking after just 12 sessions was around 40%.

Yesterday she said was about education.

“It’s about showing people the harm smoking does. It is still the biggest cause of premature death in the UK. We explain the chemicals in the cigarettes and the damage it can do to the lungs for example, there is nothing good about smoking,” she insisted.
