Gibraltar set for ‘Brexit budget’

Gibraltar can expect a ‘Brexit budget’ to weather the storm of what may lie ahead as the United Kingdom prepares to leave the European Union.

Mr Picardo was answering questions from members of the public as part of GBC’s Direct Democracy programme on Tuesday evening.

Asked what type of a budget Gibraltar can expect when the annual budget session commences as from July 2, Mr Picardo said: “You can expect a Brexit budget.”

“This will be the budget before Gibraltar leaves the European Union,” he said.

“The reality is that Gibraltar today is talking about many things, it’s not talking about the consequences of Brexit because I think that demonstrates that the Government has done a relatively good job of ensuring that we are in a position to weather the Brexit storm.”

“We are now months away from leaving the European Union,” he said adding: “Our economy continues to grow, people are not feeling threatened by Brexit neither are our businesses - I think that’s a very good thing – but we do have to ensure that we can weather the storm of what might come after the United Kingdom leaves the European Union.”
